Your heating settings

Ensuring that you have the right heating settings is essential to saving on household bills; by doing this you can save up to a whopping £80 pa by just turning your thermostat down by 1 Deg C! If, like most of the UK population, you’re still using traditional gas central heating systems, you really need to be on the game when it comes to efficiency. Being vigilant about not leaving the heating on when you leave your property plus not heating rooms you’re not using, you will save even more money.

Don’t let your heating go to waste

There’s very little point taking a smarter approach to heating your home if the insulation properties are not up to scratch. By making sure draughts around windows, doors or even skirting boards are dealt with, upgrading your double glazing and roof insulation (even if you have insulation in the attic think of it like adding another blanket on your bed*), there are potentially huge savings to be made.

*Installing a good quality loft insulation can have a notable impact on the amount of heat which can escape your home, and could save you up to £135 pa in the process.

Exploring new heating systems

It is inevitable that the long-term solution to heating homes in the most environmentally friendly and cost-effective ways possible is to look at new innovative ways of doing it, with options now readily available such as with infrared radiant heating. As the media keep telling us gas central heating will be banned in new homes by 2025. With immense efforts being made by the industry to improve the grid, the grid carbon factor of electricity (which basically means its contribution to CO2 emissions) continues to fall and it is now the greenest way to heat and power your home. Also with the improvements in solar/battery storage heating your home using energy efficient electric methods is simply a no brainer.

Understanding what the differences are

Heat sources such as infrared radiant heat bring fantastic benefits to reducing your energy bills and helping to reduce your carbon footprint.  There are some obvious differences with traditional gas systems and learning how to heat your home with radiant heat is very simple. Convected heat moves warm air around your home, infrared works like the sun, heating solid objects and the fabric of the building (and you) then these warmed objects radiate the warmth back into the air. This creates a much more even heat distribution in your home, and helps to prevent damp and mould growth by warming all surfaces.
